Kobe Bryant: investigators on scene to determine cause of helicopter crash

Image
Investigators worked on a rugged hillside outside Los Angeles on Monday to determine the cause of the helicopter  crash  that killed retired basketball star Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna and seven others About 20 investigators scoured the crash site in Calabasas, some 30 miles (48km) north-west of downtown Los Angeles, where the helicopter went down in foggy weather on Sunday. The cause of the disaster remains unknown, and is under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board. Federal safety investigators are exploring factors including the pilot’s history and the chopper’s maintenance records, said the National Transportation Safety Board member Jennifer Homendy. But much attention has focused on the weather, which was considered dangerous enough that the Los Angeles police department and the county sheriff’s department had grounded their choppers. Bryant’s helicopter had received special approval to fly amid the worse than usual weather,  the New York T

US basketball legend Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna were among nine people killed in a helicopter crash in the city of Calabasas, California. Bryant, 41, and Gianna, 13, were travelling in a private helicopter when it came down and burst into flames. The LA county sheriff said there were no survivors. Bryant, a five-time NBA champion, played for the LA Lakers throughout his career and is considered one of the greatest players in the game's history. Tributes from celebrities and fellow sports stars have been pouring in, many expressing shock at his sudden death. Moments of silence have been observed at basketball games across the US. Bryant was also remembered  at the Grammy Awards  , which were held at the Staples Center, the Los Angeles Lakers' stadium, on Sunday night. Kobe Bryant's pilot had special permission to fly before crash. Here's what else we know

As investigators scour for clues in the helicopter crash that killed nine people, including NBA legend Kobe Bryant, the pilot's last words with air traffic control illustrate a foggy scene in the sky. Pilot Ara Zobayan said he was climbing to avoid a cloud layer, The National Transportation Safety Board said. But when air traffic control asked him what he planned to do, there was no response, NTSB board member Jennifer Homendy said. Visibility was so low Sunday that the Los Angeles Police Department had decided to ground its helicopters that morning. But it's still not certain what caused the helicopter to crash, killing parents, children, and one of the greatest athletes of all time. Bryant, 41, and his daughter Gianna, 13, were heading to a basketball game in Thousand Oaks, where he was expected to coach and she was expected to play. All eight passengers killed in the crash were children or parents. They included two of Gianna's teammates with their parents

Image
A KwaZulu-Natal taxi driver has been hailed as a “hero” after he helped a woman give birth in his taxi on Wednesday. According to the provincial health department, the 31-year-old taxi driver, Nhlonipho Zulu, was about to finish his shift when an eight-month pregnant passenger told him she suspected she was about to go into labour. Zulu was travelling between Nongoma and Hlabisa at the time and had to drop off two other passengers before rushing the pregnant mother, in her early 20s, to the nearest clinic. However, upon examining her, nurses allegedly disputed that she was about to go into labour. They stand accused of not only being dismissive and using rude language, but also refusing to call an ambulance, instead telling the taxi driver to take the pregnant woman to Benedictine Hospital about 30km away. The KZN health department is aware of the allegations and has ordered an investigation. Zulu recalled how the hysterical mother begged him to stop the taxi and help he
